Whetstone Recreation Center
3923 N. High Street
Columbus, Ohio 43214

Whetstone is a civic treasure, a unique resource that both forms and reflects the diversity and beauty of our community.

Located at the heart of Clintonville, the current rec center helped to sustain our community for more than 50 years.

As we look to the future, we recognize the need to expand, upgrade and enhance the center to provide for the needs of our growing, changing community.

The value of a vibrant recreation center can hardly be overstated. Families benefit from accessible, affordable activities. Children develop socially, emotionally and physically through participation in sports and art classes. Adults enjoy social interactions with peers and benefit from exercise and leisure activities. Area home owners benefit from higher property values.

The City of Columbus has committed more than $5 million to expand and improve the center, which upon reopening in 2008, will be named the Whetstone Community Center. The new Whetstone will be the city's largest neighborhood center. This investment in Whetstone will probably be the last significant public expenditure on the site for decades.

The Whetstone Renovation Initiative was founded in 2005 to ensure that the renovation meets our community's needs. The initiative is complete and this is a reality. The WRI invites you to participate in a $500,000 capital campaign to support the following projects:

Clintonville Community Room
This 1,400 square-foot room will provide a neighborhood gathering space, a venue suitable for community programs and meetings. From seniors' card games to kids' birthday parties, this room will serve all members of our community.

Paved Patio
This patio, paved with bricks sponsored by donors, will be installed near the northwest side of the center, near the kitchen and community room. Furnished with picnic tables and tastefully landscaped, this area will serve both private and public functions, providing a flexible outdoor space for various community gatherings.

For generations, the Whetstone playground has been a favorite recreation destination for local families. Funds from this campaign will help build a new, top-quality play space suitable for active kids of all ages. Some of the existing equipment will be moved to the lower meadow fields to create a second playground.

Fitness Room
The rec center's existing fitness equipment is both limited and outdated. This campaign will help purchase new cardio and weight machines for the expanded fitness room.

Furnishings and equipment
Much of Whetstone's current furniture and equipment is decades old and in need of replacement. A significant portion of the money raised in this campaign will pay for new furnishings and fixtures for the community room reception area, kitchen, game room, and classrooms.
